Zastava to shut down Yugo production

KRAGUJEVAC -- Kragujevac automaker Zastava looks set to discontinue manufacturing of its Yugo vehicles.
Upcoming cooperation with General Motors (GM) will mean that Zastava will gradually shut down its own production as it undertakes to manufacture Opel vehicles for domestic and later on foreign markets.
Should the project develop as planned, Zastava will start with the manufacturing of the first Opel model in June next year, followed by the second in 2009, the company’s director Zoran Radojević said Wednesday.
Radojević explained the GM contract will be similar to that Zastava has with Italy’s Fiat. However, Opels produced in Kragujevac will bear the original German brand, instead of being a localized version, as is the case with Fiat Punto produced in Kragujevac, known as Zastava 10.
